Sports Memorabilia Buyers

Sports memorabilia buyers have been having a hard time in recent years, and many have gone out of business recently. Sports memorabilia has long been a huge business, and sports fans have been ready to spend small fortunes on obtaining a small memento of their beloved sports personality. There are of procedure two sorts of sports memorabilia buyers, those that do it out of love and those who run it as a business, although the two are not mutually exclusive.

Consider recent sales that have seen a soccer shirt worn by Pele sell for almost a quarter of a million dollars, and the Mark McGwire 62nd home run from 1998 sold for over a million. Baseballs and soccer shirts are beloved items for collectors of sports memorabilia, although autographs make up most of the market. You would think that with such request and such high prices being paid, that sports memorabilia buyers would be having a great time. Unfortunately it is far from the truth.

Those collectors who are seeking a memento are finding prices increasingly steadily, with request often outstripping supply. This again sounds good for the professional sports memorabilia buyers as they should be production more of a profit. Again though, they are faced with a huge problem, a problem of forgeries.

The growth of the internet has seen a new wave of sports memorabilia buyers, who look on auction sites to grab a bargain. Look on such sites and you will see literary hundreds of autographs from your favourite sports star, it makes you wonder how they have had so much time to sign so many items. The short rejoinder is that they haven't had the time and haven't signed the items. A recent test saw three autographs of Ricky Hatton being purchased on line. When shown to Hatton he confirmed that none of them were admittedly his signatures. As fake sales have increased so genuine businesses have had to close down because they are constantly being undercut in prices.

With so many fakes on the store how do genuine buyers know that their purchases are real? Well the most common way is to make sure every item comes with a certificate of authenticity, although this is no warrant in itself. So only buy from a reputable dealer.

Sports memorabilia buyers can have fun and can run a business but care is needed by both sets otherwise it could prove to be a dying hobby and business.
