beginning Beekeepers: Get The Gentlest Bees For Your First Hive

A first observation before you get your bees is to make sure to get the mellowest bees inherent for your single area and weather. If you are opting for packaged bees, be sure to specify to the apiary that you are a beginning beekeeper and want diplomatic bees. Of course, that doesn't mean your bees will never sting you. If you were sitting in your home, your roof got suddenly pulled off, and person started poking straight through your home, wouldn't you feel protective? I think it's normal for anything to defend their home. Although you don't want bees that will strike on the slightest whim like the Africanized honey bees are known to do, don't expect to never get stung.

If you are lucky adequate to buy your bees locally and in person, again tell the beekeeper that you want an cordial hive. If the beekeeper is agreeable, go out into the bee yard to see their bees, but make sure you have a veil on! When the beekeeper chooses a hive for you, have her/him citation a couple of frames, without using the smoker, from the hive. If you observation that after pulling a couple of frames from the hive the girls remain unconcerned, you probably have a fine selection for your first hive.

Many beekeepers will tell you that safe bet honey bee lineages are gentler than others. It's likely that there's some differences even within a strain, however. My first hive were Italians, and they proved quite sweet, but my beekeeping instructor told me he had a couple hives of "hotheaded Italian bees" and he had to keep those hives a good distance from his main apiary. In fact, he kept them in an open space away from people.

The first swarm we hived was very genial. One of its descendant swarms was a bit more protective. We had to put our veils on whenever we looked into this hive. So rather than going for a safe bet lineage, get a known sweet-tempered hive for your climate.

Try to match your bee breed to your climate. I live in a Mediterranean climate, so the bees we first opted for were Italians as recommended by a local bee yard. If you live in a snowy clime, you might want a Russian bee. Again, you might want to consult with local beekeepers about recommended breeds for your climate.
